7 Best Things to Do in East Bali
Hidden gems and cultural treasures
Although most of Bali's tourism industry is concentrated in the southern region of the island, there are actually numerous attractions all around Bali. After all, Bali is an island with a rich history and culture that has spread around the island through the centuries. Some of the best destinations you can visit are located outside of the southern tourist hub, with the east region having a diverse mix of things to see and do. Here are some of the best things you can do while exploring east Bali.
Spend a magical day at Nusa Penida
Nusa Penida or Penida Island is a magical hidden gem on the east of Bali. This island has some of the most breathtaking views and clearest waters in the region. From the main island of Bali, you can quickly get to Nusa Penida by speedboat. Once there, you can snorkel the clear blue waters and marvel at the reefs and marine animals.
Nusa Penida has a number of beautiful beaches, waterfalls, cliff viewpoints and even a hidden cave temple in the Pura Goa Giri Putri Cave. Taking a day trip to Nusa Penida should definitely be on your list for exploring east Bali.
Hike up magnificent Mount Batur
Mount Batur is among the most famous volcanoes in Bali. Take an early morning trip to the base so you can hike up the mountain and catch the beautiful sunrise. The track up the mountain is characterised by patches of black rock signifying the volcanic lava and small green shrubs. With the sunrise, you'll also be able to see the neighbouring Mount Agung and the beautiful crater lake at the bottom of the mountain.
Go rafting on the Ayung River
Bali has a number of rivers perfectly suited for white river rafting, and the Ayung river is one of the best on the south of Bali. This river has a healthy mix of calm waters, small drops, and rocks, making it a suitable white river rafting choice for beginners and intermediate enthusiasts. However, in the rainy season, the river becomes a class IV rapids suitable for those looking for a challenge. Besides maneuvering the rapids, you'll be able to enjoy the scenic forest along the river and authentic Balinese village.
Watch the dolphins at sea
Although located at the southeast side of Bali, you shouldn't miss watching the dolphins swim along the coast of Nusa Dua. There are boats that can take you out to sea where you can watch these cute and majestic creatures play and swim about. The dolphin watching sessions are done in the morning, so you'll get to enjoy the pleasant morning sun as well.
Go scuba diving off the east coast
Bali has scuba diving locations around the island with many of them focused around the south and east region of the island. On the east side, you can go on diving excursions to Nusa Penida, Lembongan, Tulamben, and Amed to name a few.
